This school year I am homeschooling our 17 year old son for his Junior year in High School. We choose a curriculum with K-12 which is the California Core curriculum minus the school shootings and verbal abuse from the teachers. I love being a student and I was a part time student of topics I felt I wanted more training beginning Jan of this year as I felt I was able to have the time to invest in myself. I was taking writing classes from a well known playwright and songwriter. I was listening to the winds of change in April and it came in like a storm. Our son was in crisis and everything came to a halt as I gathered up resources and a supportive team. His school was harming him. He was being bullied daily and threatened when he had no witnesses. He attended a High School with a bully free policy and when we kept him accountable we were labeled troublemakers. Our son was placed in the office during lunch as way to keep him safe but this gave the students who were bullying him even more of a reason to attack him during the day.
Our son had staff that were considered support staff. His IEP was only good on paper as nothing was addressed and they didn't challenge or encourage him regarding academics. When the decision was made that he would be homeschooled once
again , we had him tested to see what grade level he was actually in. Our son who is diagnosed with Autism scored high on his IQ tests. We began the school year with seeing how much he had regressed in his study skills and manual dexterity. This was alarming and scary as we were on the eve of Junior year in High School.
With our choice to use K12 we are given a support team of professionals at no charge to us that assist our son with succeeding and regaining the skills he lost while in Special Education.
We are in our first month and he is an A student taking Jiu jitsu twice a day and 5 hours of class lectures daily with Fridays off.
I am also back to being a student as I review and learn what he is learning so I can coach him along. K12 offers training to learning coaches and parents.
I am immersed in the curriculum and seeing him succeed.
Solace Mist orders keep coming in and I always find great joy filling orders.
I am gearing up for the holidays early this year because we are going on our first Christmas vacation away this year to a cabin deep in the woods.
The bay area is always noisy and daily trees are being removed as well as homes and people.
I am grateful to have this experience and I will be grateful to return to the woods .
